During the summer of 2019, I suffered from a weird skin disease (similar to chickenpox) which left me with PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). So I was on the hunt for a skincare product which could help to brighten my skin and hopefully lighten the dark spots on my face.

I came across Isntree which is a Korean brand which is against animal testing (BIG plus) and uses “reliable, natural ingredients”. It also claims to use eco-friendly containers that can be recycled.

Since the philosophy of the brand seems to align with a lot of my standards for skincare, I decided to purchase the Isntree C-Niacin Toning Ampoule which claims to provide moisture and a brightening effect to the skin.

The Product:

Type: Ampoule

Volume: 50ml

Recommended skin type: All skin types, those looking to brighten a dull skin tone

Key Ingredients:

2% Niacinamide

Aka as Vitamin B3, Niacinamide has many studies looking into its skincare benefits. These include anti-aging by boosting collagen production (4-5% niacinamide typically used), skin brightening (2-5% used in studies) and improving the skin barrier by helping to regulate sebum and reducing inflammation (4% used in studies).

69% Sea Buckthorn Fruit Extract

Fruit containing a high levels of Vitamin C (60mg per 100g of sea buckthorn) and vitamin E (180mg per 100g of sea buckthorn). It is also a source of fatty acids which act as emollients to soften the skin and prevent TEWL (transepidermal water loss).

The Packaging:

There is a standard dropper to dispense the product. I usually use 1 full dropper of the ampoule as a step in my nighttime skincare routine, after toner and before moisturiser.

I also noticed this thing in the lid (don’t know what it’s called) but it helps to make sure the dropper isn’t dripping ampoule everywhere when you remove it from the bottle – pretty handy!

The Consistency:

Lightweight, watery consistency with no fragrance at all. It has a slight yellow tinge, which is the buckthorn extract. It absorbs quite quickly into the skin (as you can see in the 3rd picture – this was after about 10 seconds) and has a cooling effect.

The Performance:

I used this serum for about 6 months and I have seen my dark spots lighten a bit and my skin tone does look less dull than before I started using the product. I have enjoyed using this product due to its simple and non irritating ingredients list, as well as the feel of the ampoule and how quickly it absorbs into my skin. I find it is quite hydrating which is good for my dry skin.

However, I would not say it has made an incredibly noticeable difference to my skin. I am thinking of trying a product with a slightly higher niacinamide content next – maybe 4% niacinamide may brighten my skin tone a bit more? I will do some more research into that…

Pros:

Lightweight, watery texture

Fragrance free

Alcohol free

Quick absorbing, cooling on the skin

Hydrating

Helped lighten dark spots and dullness a bit

Cons:

Only a slight brightening effect

Only 2% Niacinamide (might not have much effect for some)

Overall Rating:

3/5

Isntree C-Niacin Toning Ampoule is a lightweight, hydrating ampoule containing 69% sea buckthorn fruit extract and 2% niacinamide.

When using this product, I experienced a slight brightening effect with dark spots and my overall skin tone. However the effect was small and I would be interested in trying a product with a higher percentage of niacinamide.
