Đây là series bài viết về ba nhạc sĩ vĩ đại nhất trong lịch sử sản xuất nhạc phim của Hollywood (theo ý kiến cá nhân của mình). Ở phần 1 này, mình xin giới thiệu người đầu tiên (cũng là người mình yêu thích nhất): Hans Zimmer.

1/ "Âm nhạc là người bạn tốt nhất của tôi"

Hans Zimmer, tên đầy đủ là Hans Florian Zimmer. Ông sinh ngày 12/09/1957 tại Frankfurt am Main, Đức. Biến cố mất cha khi lên sáu dường như là cú sốc quá lớn đối với Hans. Từ đó, ông chuyển đến sống tại Königstein-Falkenstein nơi ông học chơi piano tại nhà, nhưng chỉ học được một thời gian ngắn do không thích sự khuôn phép của những bài học chính thống. Ông thích tự học và tập luyện theo cách của riêng mình. Trong một buổi AMA's (Ask Me Anything: Hãy hỏi tôi bất kì điều gì) trên Reddit, Hans chia sẻ:

Tôi có hai tuần cho một khoá học piano bài bản. Tôi đã nhanh chóng bị đuổi, không những một mà tận tám trường. Nhưng tôi không lo lắng về điều đó vì âm nhạc lúc nào cũng hiện hữu trong tâm trí. Tôi bắt đầu tham gia một ban nhạc, rồi sau đó tự học.

Ông chuyển đến London vào tuổi thiếu niên và theo học trường Hurtwood House. Thời gian ở London giúp ông thành thạo thêm cả keyboard, đàn synthesizer và guitar.

Trong một buổi phỏng vấn với Mashable vào 02/2013, Hans nói về cha mẹ của mình:

Tôi sinh ra trong một gia đình Đức kiểu mẫu đầy kiêu hãnh và có tôn ti trật tự. Mẹ của tôi rất yêu thích âm nhạc, và về cơ bản là một nhạc công, và cha tôi là một kỹ sư và nhà sáng chế. 2/ Theo đuổi đam mê ở London

Hans bắt đầu sự nghiệp với vị trí chơi keyboard và synthesizer trong thập niên 1970, tại ban nhạc Krakatoa. Ông từng làm việc với The Buggles, một ban nhạc new wave, thành lập năm 1977 ở London với Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, và Bruce Woolley. Tại The Buggles, Hans lập tức gây sốt với ca khúc "Video Killed Radio Star". Sau khi hợp tác với The Buggles, ông bắt đầu làm việc cùng nhóm nhạc người Ý Krisma (một ban nhạc new wave khác) với Maurizio Arcieri và Christina Moser. Tại Krisma, ông đảm nhận vị trí synthesizer đồng thời cũng góp công trong quá trình sản xuất album thứ ba của nhóm có tựa đề "Cathode Mamma".

Trong khoảng thời gian sống tại London, Hans đã viết những đoạn nhạc quảng cáo cho Air-Edel Associates. Năm 1980, ông hợp tác với Stanley Myers, một nhà soạn nhạc có gia tài sáng tác đồ sộ, là tác giả của rất nhiều bản OST cho hơn sáu mươi bộ phim. Hans và Stanley đồng sáng lập Lillie Yard, một phòng thu đặt tại London. Tại đây, cả hai đã cùng nhau kết hợp âm nhạc giao hưởng truyền thống với các nhạc cụ điện tử. Một vài bộ phim mà Hans và Stanley từng sáng tác là Moonlighting (1982), Success is the Best Revenge (1984), Insignificance (1985), và My Beautiful Launderette (1985). Tác phẩm đầu tiên mà Hans sáng tác một cách độc lập là Terminal Exposure (1987) của đạo diễn Nico Mastorakis. Cũng trong năm 1987, ông giữ vai trò sản xuất âm nhạc cho bộ phim The Last Emperor, tác phẩm đạt chín giải Oscar năm đó (bao gồm cả giải Oscar cho Nhạc phim hay nhất).

Một trong những tác phẩm được nhiều người biết đến trong quãng thời gian ông sống tại London đó là bài hát chủ đề cho chương trình gameshow "Going for Gold" (đồng sáng tác với Sandy McClelland). Trong cuộc phỏng vấn trên BBC, ông thổ lộ:

Going for God là một ca khúc rất vui. Ngoài ra, nhờ nó mà tôi có thể trả tiền thuê nhà trong suốt thời gian ở London.

3/ Chinh phục Hollywood

Một bước ngoặt trong sự nghiệp của Hans đó là khi ông sản xuất nhạc phim cho Rain Man vào năm 1988 . Đạo diễn Rain Man, Barry Levinson đang loay hoay tìm kiếm một người đảm nhận âm nhạc cho bộ phim của mình thì vợ ông đã nghe CD OST bộ phim A World Apart (Hans là người sản xuất âm nhạc cho phim đó). Barry bị ấn tượng bởi các ca khúc của Hans và ngay lập tức liên lạc với ông để hợp tác. Trong quá trình sản xuất, Hans sử dụng synthersizers tổng hợp kết hợp với steel drum. Ông giải thích:

Đây là một bộ phim mang hơi hướng đường phố, và những bộ phim như thế thì người ta thường sử dụng guitar và hệ thống đàn dây. Tôi nghĩ rằng khi nhạc phim được cất lên, nó sẽ không lấn át các tình tiết cũng như nhân vật. Raymond (tên nhân vật) trong phim thực sự không biết mình đang ở đâu, vì anh ấy thấy thế giới quá khác biệt, cảm thấy như mình đang ở một thế giới khác. Sau khi gây tiếng vang với Rain Man, ông tiếp tục nhận được lời mời cộng tác với Driving Miss Daisy của Bruce Beresford. Theo một cuộc phỏng vấn với tạp chí Sound On Sound vào năm 2002, Hans nói đùa về Roland MKS–20 (tên một nhạc cụ điện tử, thứ đã giúp ông sản xuất nhạc phim cho Driving Miss Daisy) như sau:

Năm 1992, Hans đã đi đến Châu Phi để sử dụng các dàn đồng ca và trống của Châu Phi để sản xuất âm nhạc cho The Power of One. Sau bộ phim này, phòng hoạt hình của Walt Disney đã tiếp cận Hans, đề nghị ông sáng tác nhạc phim The Lion King (1994). Hans nói rằng ông muốn đi đến Nam Phi để ghi âm phần nhạc nền, nhưng không thể đến vì ông đã gặp chút rắc rối trong quá trình sản xuất nhạc phim cho The Power of One. Vào 12/2010, Hans Zimmer đã được vinh danh trên Đại lộ Danh vọng nơi bên cạnh những ngôi sao hàng đầu Hollywood. Năm 2012 Cùng với Pharrell Williams của The Neptunes, Hans Zimmer đã tạo nên một bức tranh âm nhạc đậm chất nghệ thuật tuyệt vời khi được vinh dự soạn nhạc và làm giám đốc âm nhạc cho lễ trao giải Oscar 84 tại Nhà hát Kodak, Los Angeles, Mỹ. Ông cũng được The Daily Telegraph xếp vào Top 100 các thiên tài sống.

Ngoài ra, ông còn là trưởng bộ phận nhạc phim tại các hãng phim DreamWorks, cũng như cộng tác cùng nhiều nhà soạn nhạc lừng danh khác tại hãng Remote Control Productions do ông sáng lập.

4/ Nghệ sĩ thiên tài với niềm đam mê âm nhạc bất tận.

Có một sự nghiệp đồ sộ với hàng chục giải thưởng danh giá lớn nhỏ, song người hâm mộ thường nhớ về Hans Zimmer như là “cha đẻ” của những bản nhạc phim bất hủ đã đi sâu vào lòng người.

Trong lần ghi âm của The Last Samurai vào đầu năm 2003, Hans đã được nhà sản xuất Jerry Bruckheimer tiếp cận, người mà trước đây ông từng cộng tác với các tác phẩm Crimson Tide, Days of Thunder, The Rock và Pearl Harbor. Jerry vốn dĩ đã hoàn thành bộ phim Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl nhưng không hài lòng với âm nhạc do Alan Silvestri sáng tác và muốn có sự thay thế. Đối với nhạc nền của The Dark Knight, Hans quyết định viết cho nhân vật Joker bằng một nốt nhạc cello do đồng nghiệp Martin Tillman làm từ lâu.
