Is S mode worth it Reddit

Trade offs.

If you want to run some application software unavailable in S Mode, then you'd need to accept the performance hit if any. Since some 3rd party software install background services along with the foreground program, such software could degrade performance. If you're willing to do some work, you could identify such services and change them from automatic startup to manual startup.

Background:

We are a MSP. User contacts me because her Boss has purchased a new computer for Her. Could we please set it up? And it had to be done Remotely, today.

Turns out it runs Windows 11 Home in S Mode.

Never mind, I'll just upgrade it to Windows Pro. Purchases key.

No, can't do that because it runs Windows 11 Home in S Mode.

OK, how do I disable S mode? Install App from Microsoft Store.

Can't install a shitty App from App Store without logging on. Can't login using Users existing M365 account, has to create a NEW account for the Windows Store including a new mail address that will never be used for anything else.

FUCK MICROSOFT FOR CREATING WINDOWS S-MODE THAT CANNOT BE DISABLED WITHOUT CREATING AN ACCOUNT FOR THE SHITTY MICROSOFT STORE!!!!

At least give us a PowerShell-command to disable that shit!

And don't give me any of that "It's for security" when the User can disable it by installing an App, how ever many hoops they have to jump thru!

Rant over.

Edit: For all those commenting, that I should just reinstall/reload: THIS HAD TO BE DONE REMOTELY Had I had physical access to the machine, I would just had installed Windows Pro, but that was not an option.

And just getting the user to create a local profile, connect to their WiFi and start Quick Assist, took more than half an hour. No way I could have her install and start a clean version of Win Pro over the Phone.

I bought a surface go recently. It's working pretty nice however I bought it to save money and its not the fastest machine.

chromium edge does most of what I want (Bing is insufferable) but I'd like to add some other non microsoft store software.

Windows says "S mode helps maintain optimal performance". Is there anything actually behind this? Or is this claim just an extension of not allowing me to inadvertently install malware or resource hogging software.

So will S mode actually do anything different to keep my tablet running faster? I'd like to get a few years out of this thing so if this is actually the case I probably will keep it in S mode for now

Microsoft employee here whom formally worked at retail stores and sold/demo'd this feature. S mode will squeeze a little more battery life out of your pc and performance will be slightly optimized. It will also effectively proof your pc against traditional malware as it will not be able to install itself normally.

With that being said, windows 8 at this point is pretty darned old so pros and cons really get mixed up a bit more.

Just ask yourself if you need to install applications that are not available on the windows store. If the answer is yes go ahead and switch out.

In any case you need to be mindful of malware, scams, phishing etc. Be mindful of what you click on and what sites you visit. Beware of things such as torrent sites as you are just as likely to be targeted with a malicious package as you are to get the content you seek.

When able maybe upgrade to another pc with a more recent version of windows that will get updates etc more regularly.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for posting in r/Windows10. You have selected the Help post flair, which is to request assistance with the Windows 10 OS and its related systems. This is not a generic tech support subreddit, so your post may be removed if your issue is not related to Windows, even if your computer has Windows installed. You may want to also post this on r/TechSupport for more exposure.

If you have not already, be sure to include as much information about your issue that you can, including any error messages, error codes, what steps it takes to create the issue, and what you have done to troubleshoot. Also, include as much information about your computer as possible, including the specs of your hardware, and/or the full make and model of your computer. It is also important to know what your full Windows version is, you can view that by going to the Settings app -> System -> About, and then it will be listed as the OS Build, for example 19042.421

I bought my wife a windows 10 laptop from best buy, maybe 6 months ago. She's been using it, loves it. Got her programs installed that she uses, all that fun stuff. Today, she unlocks her computer and finds that she can't launch any programs other than windows-default programs like Edge. Stating that "This version of Windows can only run Microsoft Apps". Clicked the link and removed the S mode crap. Read into it a bit more and lots of people say "some PCs come with 10S installed, and you can switch to 10 Home/Pro depending on your pc"

But ours came with Windows 10 Home installed , not Windows 10S Home.

Why did S mode decide to randomly turn itself on and block everything, 6 months after activation, despite the fact that MS website says 100 times, "There is no way to go back to S mode once it's off". Well, it WAS off until today, and then it was ON. So that's some bs.

Why did MS do this, and why is it even a thing. I'm a power user, so to me, I can't fathom why any human would want to run only MS Apps.

Is it worth keeping S mode?

There are a lot of good reasons to put a Windows 10 PC in S mode, including: It's more secure because it only allows apps to be installed from the Windows Store. It's streamlined to reduce RAM and CPU use. Everything a user does is automatically saved to OneDrive to free up local storage.

Is it a good idea to switch out of S mode?

To increase security and performance, Windows 11 in S mode only runs apps from the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store, or if you have Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education and want to upgrade to Windows 11, you'll need to permanently switch out of S mode.

What are the disadvantages of S mode?

The disadvantages of Windows 10 in S mode.
No programs outside the Windows Store..
Edge as your only browser..
Bing as default search engine..

Should I run Windows 11 in S mode?

Windows S Mode puts your computer on complete lockdown. Once activated, S Mode lets you enjoy the highest level of security Microsoft can offer. However, there are limitations. These limitations, in themselves, wouldn't bother you if you are not a power user or want your child to use technology safely.
