Big manufacturers launch their new range of laptops on an annual basis, even before last year’s stock has fully sold out. This, plus heavy competition between brands and retailers, means there are always good laptop deals to be had. And if there's not something that catches your eye this month, there are always new laptop deals around the corner.

Not all laptop deals being advertised are as attractive as they may first appear. Read on for our expert pick of some genuine laptop deals on models that score well in our tests and are on sale for a good price.

Laptop deals in the sales: cheap laptops under £200

Acer Chromebook 311 - £149.99

We like: Lightweight and compact - making it easily portable

We didn’t like: Connectivity options are limited

If you’re looking for a budget laptop, and can live with the limitations of Chrome OS, this model's worth considering. Particularly at this price. 

If you need to plug in multiple accessories, such as a mouse and USB hard drive, be aware that its connectivity options are limited. It has just one USB 2.0 and a single USB port which doubles as the charger.

Acer Spin 311 CP311-3H  - £199

We like: Ultra-portable

We didn’t like: No memory card slot

This low-cost laptop has a two-in-one design: you can use it as a laptop or as a tablet-like device. It's easily portable, too. On the downside, there's no memory card slot. It's one to consider if you're after a basic laptop.

Laptop deals in the sales: from £299 and under £499

Acer Swift 1 SF114-34 - £299

• Intel Pentium Silver N6000 processor

• 128GB storage

We like: Thin and lightweight

We didn’t like: Narrow screen viewing angles 

This laptop has a Full HD screen – which you won't always get for a laptop of this price. Plus two USB ports, a USB-C, HDMI and a headphone jack. This is a 2021-vintage Pentium so it won’t be far off the speed of some Intel Core i3-powered laptops.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go - £459

We like: Very lightweight

We didn’t like: Doesn't have very many ports

This is a small laptop with a 12.4-inch screen, weighing just 1.12kg. There aren’t many mid-range laptops this small, so it should appeal if you regularly need to travel with your laptop. 

The Core i5 processor has four cores, which is good for quickly opening webpages and programs.

Samsung Galaxy Book 15-inch - £499

We like: Quick performance

We didn't like: Keyboard is cramped 

Because of its large screen size, this could be a good one to consider if you need a machine you can take on-the-go but primarily use at home.

It supports the latest wi-fi standard – known as WiFi 6 –which can offer brilliant speeds if you have a router that supports it. Most supporting hardware only started to be released during 2020.

We like: Speedy performance 

We didn’t like: Screen is reflective 

This 14-inch screen laptop has an impressive spec sheet, especially when you consider just how compact and lightweight it is. It barely weighs more than a kilo, meaning you can carry this laptop with you wherever you go, without having to compromise on power.  

It's currently on sale for £799, representing a £200 saving on its typical price.

Lenovo 9i 14-inch ITL5 - £999.99

• Intel Core i5 processor
• 8GB Ram 
• 512GB storage

We like: Portable, versatile screen

We didn’t like: Poor webcam 

This laptop has a very versatile screen - it can be flipped 360 degrees, so you can use it as a tablet. It also comes with a stylus and great sound.

The webcam isn't great, though, and Skype images in our tests had limited detail and were dim and pale. Typically selling for around £1,500, it's currently being heavily discounted by Lenovo. This type of discount isn't uncommon for premium Lenovo laptops, but it's still a hefty saving.

HP Spectre x360 14-ea0007na  - £1,050

• Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor
• 8GB Ram
• 512GB storage

This 13.5-inch laptop has impressive specs. It weighs 1.35kg and is very thin, too, making it ideal for slipping into a bag. It feels robust and looks luxurious. 

It normally sells for around £1,200, but Argos is currently offering a £150 discount on this price.

Best Apple MacBook deals in the sales 

Apple MacBook Air 13 [2020] - £887

We like: Light, great keyboard and touch pad

We didn’t like: Not many ports, expensive upgrades

Its screen isn’t quite as hi-tech as the one found on the MacBook Pro but there are plenty of plus points, including its thin lightweight design. It's on sale at the moment for £887, a £62 discount on its price direct from Apple

Apple MacBook Pro 13 [2020] - £1,159

• Apple M1 processor
• 8GB Ram 
• 256GB storage

We like: Fantastic screen, rich-sounding speakers

We didn’t like: Only two ports

This lovely looking Apple MacBook has a 13.3-inch screen and a robust, all-aluminium chassis. It's a touch heavier than similar-sized rivals, at just under 1.4kg, but that may not matter to you.

This version now includes Apple's latest M1 processor. However, you only get two USB-C ports, so you'll need to buy an adaptor to expand them if you want to plug more accessories in. Typically selling for around £1,299, it's now available for around £140 less.

Acer laptop deals

You can often find deals on Acer’s UK website that aren’t available elsewhere. The website also lists a wider range of specifications on certain models that you won’t find on the high street, so it’s always worth checking here as well as the usual online stores.

We’ve found Apple laptops are very often cheaper and available for faster delivery when you don't buy direct from Apple. The main reason you’d buy directly is if you wanted a specification [such as a processor, Ram and storage] combination that isn’t available anywhere else - but be warned, this way you’re less likely to bag a bargain.

Asus laptop deals

Asus laptops are found in a wide range of retailers in various configurations, so it’s always worth shopping around. The company also sells directly on its website, but its prices are mostly higher than other retailers. 

If you’re a student, you can get 15% off if you buy direct.

Dell laptop deals

You’ll find the largest range of Dell laptops on the Dell website. If you’re thinking of buying a Dell laptop from a retailer, check whether there’s a cheaper [or better-specified model] available direct from Dell before you buy. 

Dell often has some kind of online voucher code or discount active, so it pays to wait for one before buying.

HP laptop deals

HP laptops are found in nearly every laptop retailer, but most of the ‘deals’ you’ll find are at Currys PC World, with dozens of models available. Most HP laptops go on sale at a higher price, and then are discounted by at least £100 after around a month. 

HP also sells directly through its website, so it’s always worth checking for discounts and voucher codes.

Like Asus laptops, Lenovo models are found scattered around the high street and at online-only retailers, so it’s worth doing your research. We’ve often found the best price can be found buying direct on Lenovo’s website, so always check there before you buy.

When and where are the best laptops on sale?

You should rarely consider paying full price for a laptop, but just because a deal exists doesn’t mean it’s special. Find out how to see through the tricks of the trade at key retailers.

At certain times of year, Currys loads up its clearance pages with laptop deals. Despite what the term ‘clearance’ might suggest, discounts on these models can sometimes be very small. 

If you spot a discount, do double-check whether rival stores are selling it for less. We've seen laptops initially go on sale for a higher price and then drop to a more regular price. 

Currys also operates a price-matching scheme that may not always be as good as it seems. Many of the laptops the retailer sells are exclusive to the store; it might be an exclusive colour or a slight change in specification, but it’s enough to mean the model doesn’t qualify for a price match.

Amazon laptop deals

Amazon isn’t well known for its laptop deals, but it does have a wide variety of notebooks on sale at any given time. However, many of its best-sellers are actually quite old and some are even second-hand. It’s always worth double-checking Amazon in case it has a laptop you’re interested in on discount.

Also, be wary of small-brand laptops sold exclusively on Amazon. We’ve tested a few and none of them have impressed despite the seemingly overwhelming number of positive reviews from buyers.

Argos laptop deals

Argos often has good deals on individual laptops, so it’s always worth checking back there occasionally to see what’s new. Watch for ‘deals’ marked as ‘WOW’, as these can quite often not be deals at all and simply reflect Argos wanting you to pay attention to a product. Also look for pointers that say ‘Great new price’ as we’ve seen in the past that new price can actually be higher than the old one.

The best bet for Argos deals is to look for ‘clearance’ deals as these are normally genuine discounts.

Deals on laptops for students: sales in September

There are also sales in the ‘back-to-school season’ in August and September - look out for them at Currys in particular. These are usually on the very latest models that will have launched earlier in the summer, with laptops from £200 to £600 getting some sort of discount. 

This is great if you’re after the very latest tech, although you’ll often find better deals on older models if you hold out until Black Friday. Of course, if you’re heading to uni and need a computer, this isn’t always possible.

Is Black Friday the best time to find a great cheap laptop deal?

While there are deals on laptops year round, a great time to nab a genuine bargain is around the Black Friday/Cyber Monday season. These days, this extends through most of November.

Take a look at the laptop market in the lead-up to the sale to check prices and weigh up your options – it's useful to understand how prices change so you can make a judgement on whether a deal is really as good as it looks.

It will also pay to make a list of a few laptops you'd be interested in. That way, when the deals start rolling in, you already know what it is you want and don't get tempted in by other deals on laptops you aren't familiar with.

But above all, make sure you check our laptop reviews before you buy. You're not getting a great deal if your shiny new laptop annoys you or will need upgrading in a year or two.
