“White is less famous than Lewis and Tolkien, but he was a better writer, at least as far as style goes, and his book is a true masterpiece in its own right – a thoroughly modern re-imagining of the great English epic, the story of King Arthur. Like Tolkien, White takes an ancient, mythic landscape and scales it down to human size (or perhaps he scales us up). But White’s world is more brightly lit than Tolkien’s – he dispenses with all those Wagnerian storm clouds. White’s England is all streaming banners and sun-splashed meadows and shining walls, and he lingers longer over his characters, making them more complex and flawed and divided against themselves. “

The best books on Fantasy

Lev Grossman, Novelist

“T H White wrote this in the 50s when a lot of people were writing fantasy epics, like Tolkien and C S Lewis, Mervyn Peake and all these British writers who were writing masterpieces after the war. But I think what the books all did was to take the myths of the Nordic and Celtic peoples and make them available to a traumatised post-war populus and reintroduced romanticism in a context that people who’d fought in those wars could understand. This is the King Arthur story and I guess it’s about compassion. He doesn’t want to be king, he becomes king, his best friend and his wife fall in love and he is compassionate and understanding about that and he’s always trying to put the bigger picture first. “

The best books on The Miracle of Autism

All the good things other reviewers have said about the story I agree with - I love it and have read the book at least twice over the years. This particular edition, however, does the story a disservice. It was released as one book out of the Penguin Galaxy series of 6. Unfortunately, it seems a clumsy grouping as the other books are very, very sci-fi, and the design for the series reflects this with a futuristic font used as a secondary font in the book and the only font for the spine. So instead of the typeface complementing the context of the story or, at worst, not being obtrusive, this out-of-place font constantly tears the reader out of old England with a jet-pack strapped to their back. The overall effect is like taking a vintage car and running LED strip lights all around it. If you're looking for a lovely edition to show on your bookshelf, look elsewhere - you and the story both deserve better.

An amazing book, thou some people may find it difficult to understand due to when it was written and some of the idioms used. Hopefully the world will grow up one day, though I fear not for many more centuries, until the light shines in the darkness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story ruined by poor design choice for this edition Reviewed in Australia on 29 October 2022

The book is really just too large to be a soft-cover book. It's worth getting it to read, but I doubt that it will last with any sort of regular re-reading. It should have been issued in the separate books, or as a hard cover. I suspect that it might not be financially viable to do this, so it isn't bad considering the price. The spine of the book is very weak, and the cover is very thin. So by all means buy and enjoy it, but I advise that if you want this book to collect, to look at alternatives.

These books are just lovely, and well worth obtaining.

I read this book 40 years ago and remembered it as really special... read it again now and found it odd... strangely naive and childlike... didn't finish it

I have loved this book for years, this would be the fourth reading. In parts the prose is to be cherished, such eloquence. In parts the story becomes ponderous, and takes mature patience to work through. Overall though, this is worth ever minute of the reader's time.

There is so much to be learned about life from the telling of this story. This book should be ready by young people and old.

Among the many modern reinterpretations/retelling of the Arthurian stories, this one by T.H White is right up there with Steinbeck's version. Beautifully written, it brings to life the sense of awe and wonder that is the greatest legacy of these medieval cycles. Ideal as a gift for both Arthur novices as well as people who are familiar with Malory. If you like stories of medieval knights and chivalry, you can do no better than T.H. White.
