Certain herbs and natural materials cause ghosts to become weaker. You can use this to your advantage, just grab some Smudge Sticks and burn them near the Ghost.
Smudge Sticks are a purchasable item that will deter the ghost from hunting for a period of time when burned.
Usage
To light a smudge stick, have a lighter in the inventory, hold the smudge stick, then press the Secondary Use key. In singleplayer only, smudge sticks thrown on the ground can also be lit by aiming at it while holding a lighter or candle, then pressing Secondary Use.
Once lit, the smudge sticks will begin to smoke for 6 seconds. Each smudge stick uses 6 attempts over the duration of 6 seconds to successfully apply its effect[s], but can only apply the effect[s] once. When the smudge stick is used up, the smoke will stop being emitted and the model will finish burning to a stub. There is no explicit indication of whether the smudge stick was used effectively or not. Smudge sticks are normally discarded after use.
Hunt prevention
When the ghost is within 6 metres of a smudge stick while it is burning, ghost activity will be increased marginally, and the ghost will be unable to initiate a regular hunt for 90 seconds, 180 seconds for a Spirit, or 60 seconds for a Demon. If the ghost is a Yurei, it will also not wander outside of its current room for 90 seconds. Smudging will not prevent cursed hunts nor stop an already ongoing hunt, but doing this during a hunt it will prevent further attempts to initiate regular hunts for the specified duration starting from when the smudging effect is applied. Using another smudge stick before an existing hunt prevention timer has run out will not reset or extend the timer; the effect does not stack in this case.
Blinding the ghost

Smudge sticks can be used to "repel" the ghost during a hunt. For this effect to apply, the ghost must be within 6 metres of any player any time while the smudge stick is burning, regardless of who activated the smudge stick.[1] When the effect is successfully applied, the ghost will act as if there were no players around; one can walk through it without dying. After this period, the ghost will be able to see and kill players again.
Another set of sticks can be used for the same purpose during the same hunt, with no diminishing returns [i.e. the smudge stick's effects will last for 6 seconds each time]. The smudge can overlap but not stack; smudging the ghost 4 times in quick succession does not result in a blinding time of 24 seconds, for example.
Tips
- When smudging the ghost during a hunt, the ghost may coincidentally take the same path as a player, especially in tight hallways. It does not mean that the ghost can still see the player. Smudge the ghost near [but not in] a hiding spot, so that you can reach it before the ghost is no longer blind.
- If you are not the host, and especially if you have some server lag, try smudging slightly earlier to avoid the ghost killing you before the smudge effect actually applies.

Trivia
- Despite being referred to as "smudging", the smudge sticks are used more akin to "smoke cleansing". Smudging is a spiritual and religious practice found in various Native American cultures, many of which use white sage, a plant native to North America. Smudging is typically used for personal spiritual cleansing, prayer, and ceremonial occasions, the technique varying from tribe to tribe. Smoke cleansing, on the other hand, is used predominantly to ward off negative energy and evil spirits, and is used by wafting the smoke of sage or herbs around an area, sometimes accompanied by prayer, chanting, or incantations. Smoke cleansing is a practice commonly found in modern-day Wicca and witchcraft.
