Well controlled and silent. The Pavilion 14's IPS display, Bang & Olufsen loudspeaker system and its largely silent operation make this device a great entertainer. The notebook is equipped with an Intel i5 CPU and 16 GB of RAM, ensuring plenty of processing power.

Attractive even when closed: anodized aluminum with a white finish and a reflective HP logo

Similar to the recently reviewed HP Pavilion x360 14 [2021], this version without a touchscreen features a large RAM module and a pleasantly bright display. As both the battery capacity and the various security functions ranging from a Kensington Lock to a webcam shutter have been deployed rather sparingly, the dv-series HP Pavilion 14 is clearly intended for private use.

Potential users should be pleased with the good speakers and the departure from a silver or black chassis as well as with the device's performance. Still, the lack of a dedicated GPU means that only simple games are displayed smoothly. Our test unit is equipped with 16 GB of RAM and a 1-TB SSD, which is very generous for this kind of device. The model is also available with components that are half the size. Buyers can choose between the i5-1135G7 used in this device and the faster i7-1165G7.

The segment of 14-inch models offers a wide range of competitors. The Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400 and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14ITL05, for instance, have many similarities - including a mixed verdict. Find out what we make of this device's weaknesses in this detailed review.

The chassis gives an overall stable impression. The back of the display and the frame around the keyboard are made of aluminum. The lid has a white finish, which, combined with the matte surface structure, differentiates it from other notebooks. The surfaces are anodized and hardly show any signs of aging. While the bottom cover is made from plastic, it looks very similar to the other parts of the case and will only be recognized as such at closer inspection.

The slightly roughened surfaces do not show finger prints. The HP logo, on the other hand, shows smeary marks very quickly. The workmanship is good. The individual components look neat and were put together seamlessly.

The device is also very resistent to warping. The notebook always stays flat, and there are no noises that would indicate friction. The hinges appear to be robust. The way they are anchored in the housing allows for precise adjustments. We did not notice any teetering of the display while typing. Because the hinges are so tight, it is difficult to open the device with one hand. We were somewhat disappointed by the stability of the keyboard, which gives way slightly unter increased pressure.

The display's opening angle is 130°. The display cover lifts the back of the notebook off the table slightly, but this is hardly noticeable thanks to the chassis' sound construction.

The weight of just below 1.5 kg is within the average range and should not be an issue on the go. The Pavilion 14 is surprisingly thick for a 14-inch device with a thickness of 17 mm. More on that in the section on maintenance.

At least there is a USB A port both on the left and right side of the device. This is complemented by an HDMI 2.0 port that supports 4K resolution at 30 fps, a microSD card reader that is slightly faster than average, a combined audio port and one USB-C port.

This selection allows for a monitor, a faster storage medium and smartphones or rechargers to be connected. The USB-C port does not fulfill the specifications for Thunderbolt, however, and is limited to 10 Gbit/s. The two other USB ports only support the older USB 3.0 standard.

This port selection, while small, should suffice in most situations, and the USB-C port can be used with an adapter, making it possible to connect several devices at the same time. But we would have appreciated at least one Thunderbolt port. The notebook clearly isn't strapped for space, after all. Fortunately, this also means that the ports are well spaced out.

The Wi-Fi module Realtek 8822CE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC only reaches an average of 600 Mbit/s when sending and receiving data in our other tests. That is more than sufficient for any internet application. Even large blocks of data can be transferred fairly quickly at this rate.

However, our test module only reached about two thirds of the expected speed when receiving and just over 10 percent of the average value when sending. The router showed that the Wi-Fi 5 standard was hardly used at all. Instead, the Wi-Fi module was communicating using Wi-Fi 4 at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. Still, these weak results might even go unnoticed with some private users because it will still max out a 50-Mbit internet connection.

Based on these results, we can only conclude that there was some kind of issue with the Wi-Fi module in our test unit. After all, we would have expected results in the range of 600 Mbit/s, similar to those of other notebooks equipped with the same Wi-Fi module. Our HP Pavilion is clearly a case for warranty.

The webcam has a resolution of 720p, which is typically low. The color deviations a clearly noticeable. Unfortunately, the same can be said for many integrated laptop webcams.

Fortunately, however, the fairly good image in low lighting and the reliable dual array microphone still make for good video calls. Voices sound natural and background noises such as music are tuned down, making the caller easy to understand.

The missing mechanical webcam shutter might be an issue for some users.

In theory, HP has made maintaining and upgrading individual components very easy in the HP Pavilion 14. Unfortunately, the bottom cover is very difficult to remove, counteracting the device's high serviceability. Four of six screws are hidden beneath glued-on rubber strips. With time, as the glue hardens, it will probably become almost impossible to remove these without damaging or ripping them. The bottom cover made of plastic is held in place by a large number of clips that can also be damaged when trying to remove the cover. We recommend using a plastic tool to pry it open. A good place to start is between the display hinges.

Once you have managed to remove the bottom cover, however, you have access to two RAM slots that both support up to 32 GB. The Wi-Fi module can also be replaced, as can the standard 2280 SSD. Even the battery can be exchanged easily. The fan is accessible for cleaning.

All this explains why the Pavilion is slightly thicker than its competition. The maintenance possibilities are great - as long as you manage to remove the bottom cover without damaging it.

The most important components can be replaced

Two full-fledged slots mean RAM can easily be expanded

The standard-size chicklet keyboard is fast and precise. Users who type a lot should be very pleased with this keyboard. Both the counterpressure and the slightly audible click when the key is pressed leave a high-quality impression. Travel is on the short side as expected, but satisfactory nonetheless. Because the foundation is very stable even under strong pressure, the keyboard gives a good overall impression.

The contrast between the silver keys and dark gray lettering is not ideal. Fortunately, keyboard backlighting makes it easy to recognize the keys in low lighting. During the day, the white backlighting on the silver background can be hard to see, depending on the way the light falls. The backlighting can actually be counterproductive in these situations.

The typical layout without a number block and with smaller arrow keys should only be an issue for private users if they would like to use this device for gaming. Had HP decided to position the power button outside of the keyboard, they would have had space for full-size arrow keys.

The power button is integrated into the keyboard - not really ideal

The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the wrist rest

There is hardly anything to criticize about the touchpad: It responds precisely and can be used just as accurately with one or four fingers, which is also due to the large surface. Only pressing the mouse keys feels a bit spongy. This does not apply to left-clicking via the normal touch-sensitive surface.

The solid keyboard frame creates a pleasant counterpressure while typing

Close-up of panel

Backlight bleeding along the left side

The 14-inch IPS panel is good. It features the stable viewing angles we have come to expect from an IPS display and is easy to read even outdoors thanks to its good brightness. Despite brightness levels being slightly limited when running on battery, the 330 nits still ensure that text can be read easily.

The contrast ratio and black value, however, did not fulfill our high expectations. These values were twice as good on the previous HP Pavilion 14, for example. There are many panels with comparable characteristics, in the MSI Summit B15 A11M, for example. Photos lack brilliance due to the low contrast, but other than that we don't expect users to notice this flaw during everyday use.

We were pleased to find that the screen showed hardly any screen bleeding. There was one lighter area along the left edge that might be visible in very dark scenes, but it is not that noticeable. The response time of 17/37 ms is above average. We did not encounter any PWM flickering.

While the display does not cover the entire sRGB color space, it still reaches an above-average coverage of 92 percent. The panel covers 63 percent of the Adobe color space, which is typical for displays that cover the entire sRGB color space.

Color accuracy is fine without having to calibrate the display, although the average color space deviation of 5 will be noticeable to the trained eye. The panel does not have a blue cast. Colors are displayed more or less perfectly after calibrating the display with a photospectrometer, which leads to a DeltaE value of 1, far lower than the typical limit of 3.

The notebook can be used outdoors or on the go thanks to its brightness of 330 nits. Content remains easy to read even under direct sunlight [based on our trial during winter]. Colors naturally lose some of their radiance. Nevertheless, a higher contrast would be desirable if the laptop is occasionally used outdoors.

Even from the most acute angle, the colors and contrasts of the screen content remain stable. Only the brightness is minimally reduced. This is what you would expect from an IPS panel.

The combination of an Intel Core i5-1135G7 and 16 GB of RAM that can even be further expanded is more than sufficient for all multimedia applications. That said, the HP Pavilion 14-dv0357ng soon reaches its limits when it comes to 3D applications, which is due to the missing dedicated GPU.

The i5-1135G7 clearly focuses on low power consumption and heat development. Still, the performance improvement compared to the predecessor i5-1035G7 is not to be underestimated thanks to the efficiency of 10-nm architecture.

The CPU can be used for more than simple office tasks. It is particularly well suited to multitasking such as simultaneous streaming, surfing and file management. The alternative CPU, Intel Core i7-1165G7, is a good choice for anyone who needs to perform more demanding tasks.

The i5 has four cores that clock at a rate of 4.2 GHz. The total of eight chips are ideal for running several programs in parallel.

The graph illustrates that performance is reduced after 28 seconds irrespective of temperature developments

It is worth taking a closer look at how HP has designed the power limit for this device. The design requires a heat dissipation of 15 W. The processor can consume up to 51 W for a short time [2.4 ms]. After that, the CPU remains at 22 W for 28 seconds and is then limited to 15 to 12 W if the heavy load continues.

Other manufacturers, such as Asus, allow the i5 at least 25 W while others again give it the usual maximum of 28 W for a certain period of time. This is why the Pavilion's Cinebench loop results are below average. Some similar laptops reach up to 20 percent more performance, which is also reflected in their power consumption.

* ... smaller is better

The fairly realistic PCMark 10 illustrates the CPU's advantages. It provides plenty of computing power for starting programs [the 2.4 ms mentioned earlier]. The notebook is not made for complex tasks with long-term loads but rather for tasks at irregular intervals that only require the processor's performance for a moment or so.

Therefore it is no surprise that the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14ITL05, which achieved a significantly better result in the CineBench, actually performs minimally worse in the PCMark 10. This indicates that the processor can keep up with its competition in the area of its intended use [at home, for private purposes] despite getting low results in terms of raw performance. Meanwhile, it requires less cooling and the fan remains silent for a lot of the time.

This is noticeable when using the HP Pavilion 14 in everyday use. There is hardly any delay when starting programs. The device can easily support several browser tabs streaming video at the same time. The fan is silent most of the time, despite several tasks using processing power.

We tested system latency with LatencyMon. This resulted in comparatively high values above 2 ms. The driver overview indicates that the kernel mode driver framework Wdf01000.sys is responsible for this latency. However, this long execution time is presumably a symptom of an ACPI driver that is too slow.

Therefore, this configuration is not suited to real-time audio and video applications. We measured ten dropped frames within a minute when playing 4K video on YouTube. That is perfectly acceptable for an office segment device.

The M.2 SSD from Intel in our test unit fulfilled our expectations. The deviation from the recorded average values is within a tolerable range. However, the storage device does a meager job if you compare it to other models. The SSD from SK Hynix in the Acer Swift 5 SF514, for example, has noticeably better access times.

Overall, however, no process is expected to max out the speed of the storage device. A faster SSD would therefore not offer any advantages. It's size of 1 TB, on the other hand, is a real advantage. If you want to store a large collection of photos or video or record videos yourself and store them directly on the laptop, then this is the size to choose.

The Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 80EUs is responsible for getting motion onto the screen. The chip is integrated with the processor as an SoC. It supports DirectX 12 and reaches a clock rate of 1.3 GHz. However, the CPU's clock rate has to be reduced if the GPU is under heavy load, in order to limit heat development. The configuration with an Intel Coe i7 is equipped with a slightly more powerful Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EUs

Although the GPU performance has increased noticeably compared to the predecessors, it can still only support video rendering and image processing for private purposes. The device cannot handle more demanding games, but should be able to display older or simpler titles with some cutbacks.

Because of the way the processor is reigned in, the GPU's performance is actually above average. It is allowed to contribute more to heat development than in notebooks that allow the CPU more access to power.

Simple, non-demanding games can be played on the Pavilion. The newer and more complex a title, the less likely it is for the frame rate to suffice. Nonetheless, there is a wide range of games, from Battle Royal titles to sports simulations, that can be played smoothly at reduced image quality.

We recommend choosing a resolution below FullHD and low details. With these settings, users should even be able to play some of the classics from 6 or 7 years ago. We also recommend always connecting the device to power when playing games, as the CPU and GPU cannot reach their full potential when running on battery.

The Pavilion does a surprisingly good job at our Witcher 3 stress test at highest settings, although the game is far from playable at this low level of details.

Instead, the measured rates show that the temperature of the SoC drops to far below 60°C after a short peak. GPU and CPU are then limited to a maximum of 17 W. The meagre frame rate remains at around 11 fps throughout. This performance is comparable with that of the Pavilion 14-ce3040ng, despite the latter being better equipped with a 10th generation i7 and a dedicated GPU.

The core temperature drops, but the frame rates remain more or less the same

Because the processor is limited, the fan remains silent when browsing the web, streaming videos and under low load in general. When the device does need to be cooled, the fan initially runs at a speed that is hardly audible. Even the highest fan level is quiet enough to be considered a subtle background noise.

The change between the different stages has been well designed. There was no whining, permanent switching on and off or frequent speed changes. The noise development was restrained and hardly or not at all perceptible in most cases.

Temperatures, PL1 and clock rate during Prime95

The system can tolerate a CPU temperature of almost 100 °C for a short amount of time. The Prime95 stress test showed that the device starts to throttle after 28 seconds. The SoC's temperature then drops to around 70 °C and remains there while the CPU has access to 15 to 17 W.

This is noticeable both on the top and bottom of the device. The surface temperatures only just exceed 40 °C near the processor. The wrist rests remain significantly cooler. The battery and speakers that are positioned in this area generally don't play an important role in temperature development.

If the HP Pavilion 14 is under less load, the temperature remains at around 30 °C, making it possible to use the laptop on your lap or on the couch.

[±] The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.5 °C / 105 F, compared to the average of 34 °C / 93 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
[+] The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.9 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 36.6 °C / 98 F
[+] In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.6 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 29.4 °C / 85 F.
[+] The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 30.8 °C / 87.4 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
[-] The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.9 °C / 82.2 F [-2.9 °C / -5.2 F].

The laptop can hardly be stressed. Because the power supply to the processor is always throttled after half a minute, the internal temperature stays at just under 70 °C for a longer period of time. If the iGPU is also stressed, both components have to share the power consumption. Thus, the heat output is distributed over a slightly larger area, which explains the slightly lower temperatures when running Prime95 and FurMark in combination.

The speakers are positioned below the wrist rest and point downward. They can reach their full potential when the device is positioned on a hard table, which acts as a reflective surface. The principle is comparable with a modern TV set and is implemented well in the Pavilion 14.

This was to be expected, as one would hope that Bang & Olufsen would only lend its name to a device with speakers that are at least above average. Music and films sound nicely balanced. The lack of bass tones should come as no surprise considering the size of the speakers.

Only when the volume is too high do a few noise interferences occur. A tinny sound interferes from about 80% of the maximum volume. However, the speakers are absolutely recommendable for music up to that point. Especially simple desk speakers often sound worse.

Users can connect additional speakers to the audio jack. The HDMI and DisplayPort can also be used for audio.

The usually energy-efficient i5-1135G7 is surprisingly power hungry in this device. Unlike its competition, the Pavilion consumes an average of 8 W without load and 38 W under load. Only the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14ALC05 requires more power.

The Witcher stress test clearly shows that the demand remains almost stable after the first reduction of power consumption. The 45 watt power supply is definitely sufficient, although an even weaker one would not have been a good idea.

* ... smaller is better

The 43 Wh battery isn't particularly generous, even in an energy-efficient notebook. Unsurprisingly, the laptop only lasted around 6 hours both in the web browsing test, during which a new website is accessed every 30 seconds, and when playing the film "Big Buck Bunny" in a loop. While the results are fine for this battery size, notebooks in the office segment usually reach almost 9 hours of battery life. The Lenovo Slim 7 14ITL05 even manages 11 hours, which might make it the better choice if portability is important to you.

Our test with the game "Witcher 3", which puts particular strain on the SoC, lead to a surprisingly good, above-average value for the HP Pavilion due to the throttling of the processor and additional reduction of the iGPU's performance.

The battery will suffice for an evening spent on the sofa or for the occasional session of browsing the web, but the device will not last an entire working day on battery.

The 43.3 Wh battery is rather small

The Pavilion 14-dv0357ng, provided by HP

The laptop has made a good overall impression. The HP Pavilion 14-dv0357ng has a simple exterior; its white display cover imparts a certain elegance. The keyboard is comfortable and includes backlighting. The display's values are slightly above average [except for the meager contrast ratio]. Performance is very well suited to most everyday needs. The fact that our test model had to be exchanged due to Wi-fi problems does cloud the overall picture a little, but such an issue should usually fall under the warranty agreement and therefore be easy to resolve.

Attractive and perfectly suited for use at home. The slow connection ports and small battery of the HP Pavilion 14-dv0357ng could be an issue for some users.

The fact that the device does not offer any security features and only has a limited selection of ports should not be too much of a problem for this target group. Even the weak camera is good enough for video calls while the microphone and speakers are some of the device's best features.

The processor is very well adjusted for a device that is intended for online shopping, movie nights on the couch and writing emails. The lower performance over time has a positive impact on fan noise and limits heat development without affecting the device's performance when using office applications or browsing the web. Even the 3DMark Fire Strike results that evaluate gaming performance are better than the average for this iGPU.

On the other hand, 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage might be more than would be necessary for a device that is used at home. In most cases, the configuration with half the size components will probably be the more sensible choice. It should offer plenty of performance nonetheless; nobody wants a notebook that is overburdened by twenty browser tabs.

The smaller battery and missing Thunderbolt ports can, however, be a challenge for certain areas of use. If this might be an issue for you, we recommend taking a look at the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14ITL05.
