1. Distinguish between a business function and a business process. Describe how a
business process cuts across functional lines in an organization. How might a manager
organize his or her staff in terms of business processes rather than functional departments?
What benefits would there be with this type of organization? What challenges would it pose?
The business function has specific responsibilities and activities on a regular basis to
enable the business to carry out the mission or to that functional area of operation
which are Marketing and Sales, Supply Chain Management, Accounting and
Finance, and Human Resources. While the business process is a collection of
activities that takes one or more kinds of input and creates an output, such as report
or forecast, that is of value to the customer. In order to achieve the successful
business, the business process cuts across functional lines in an organization by
doing different tasks from different areas. All the tasks that they performed from
different areas is correspond to the same business process. For example, if there is
something broken to the product of the customer, any person from different areas
can report and have analysis about that, and can referred it to repair or change with
another. Even they in different areas and different tasks, they only have one goal and
that is in the business process. Being a manager, it is not easy to organize well, the
manager should have authority to organize his or her staff in terms of business
processes. The manager should controlled and managed correctly his or her staff,
because being controlled correctly and wise to the employees is the important factors
to get the best results from their jobs, also right communication to each other. The
benefits would there be with this type of organization is that to get a successful
output. Having business function and business process helps to improve
performance and flow of different areas to finish the products immediately, also
aiming the goal of an organization or business. Hence, the challenges would be how
can they properly deliver the products to the customers without any problems or
damage to it. They need to ensure and have best practices to avoid any problem in
order to get the item properly.
