California state university san bernardino reviews

California State University of San Bernardino was an excellent choice for me. I went there for 5 years and even got to explore another campus while still being a CSUSB student with their National Student Exchange program. The professors there are professional, insightful, and fun, and the classwork is easy to understand and complete.

Tips for prospective students

I would recommend having a plan as soon as you know what your major will be. It will not only save you a BUNCH of time, but will help you to get in to your classes easily once your registration date is set and not have to be put on a wait-list. I would also recommend that prospective students buy a laptop because more and more students these days are taking notes in class on their ipads and laptops and it's easy to save, share or print out for future reference in class.

Academic Rigor

The Professors at CSUSB are very knowledgeable in their fields. With up-to-date lessons and tools that provide you with extra help, it's almost as if your work is being done for you. Students are provided with a syllabus, course curriculum and schedule in each class, and many professors offer lecture notes online as well. This is essential so the students can always come prepared for class and are able to see which assignments are due next.

Dorm Life

I lived in the University Village apartments for a year. It was incredible living right across the street from campus and never missing or being late for a class. All of my neighbors became great friends and we had a blast hanging out with each other on or off campus. The resources there are incredible [free computer lab, wireless internet, pool, gym, etc.] and the remarkable experiences you gain are totally worth the price.

Food and Dining

CSUSB has sooooo many restaurants on campus- it's incredible! From Denny's to Starbucks and Taco Bell, and even a Commons cafeteria where they make large yummy homemade meals and desserts- why would any student want to eat anywhere else??

What to do for fun

Although joining clubs and sororities/fraternities are fun, they may be a little cliche.... I HIGHLY recommend their free or low-cost outdoor fitness and recreational activities as well as the Student Union activities. I have had SO MUCH FUN going to all of these creative activities including free Thanksgiving dinners, canoeing and hiking events, salsa dance lessons, art galleries, etc. etc. etc.!!!

Bang for the buck

California State University of San Bernardino is a little expensive but it is an education WORTH paying for. Also, nearly everyone I know there receives scholarships and grants to pay for most if not all of it. Make sure you fill out the CSUSB scholarship application because I've heard they're very liberal in awarding scholarships. I recommend renting books if tuition costs are a little much for you. They also have great book buyback programs as well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's this one circle of trees that I always hear about on campus behind some of the buildings.... I hear it's a great place to hang out. Also, there is an LDS Church building across from Jack Brown Hall that provides Bible Studies, Institute classes, free lunches and TONS of fun games [including card and board games, ping pong, water baseball, ultimate frisbee, nerf gun obstacle courses etc.], activities, meals and a free quiet study place [I take naps there all the time] for anyone, not just Mormons. ;]

Great for these types of students

EVERYONE.

Campus Safety

In all honesty, there were a couple small incidents on campus last year but the good thing about CSUSB is that they not only send alerts to our cellphones and emails, they also provide 24/7 on-campus escorts, free taxi service home to those who are drunk [I've heard], and emergency call boxes all around the campus, even in parking lots to ensure students' safety. Also, if it gets REALLY WINDY on campus, they shut down the school for a day or two. HELLO WEEKEND!!!!

Cal State San Bernardino’s motto is “Come here, go anywhere” and undergrads certainly feel that sentiment rings true. The university provides a “great education” that allows students to “discover amazing things about [themselves].” CSUSB offers a substantial number of majors and students’ heap praise on the “well recognized business program” as well as the “tremendous” criminal justice program and “great” nursing school. Professors at CSUSB receive high marks. “Passionate” and “knowledgeable,” teachers here strive to “make sure the material is understood.” Students are also grateful for “the enthusiasm they bring to every lecture.” A junior illustrates by sharing, “My professors bring a sense of humor to the classroom, which allows them to be a lot more approachable. They allow me to have fun while I am learning.” And it’s certainly evident that “professors want you to do well, and provide resources for students to make it happen.” As a math major explains, “When a questions arises, they are always willing to explain it thoroughly, so that all students understand.” And one ecstatic freshman concludes, “So far my academic experience is far beyond what I had anticipated. It is more than great; it’s amazing.”

Student Body

Across the board, undergrads at CSUSB insist that “there are no typical students” here. As one psych major explains, “We have great diversity which provides a great mixture of beliefs and ideas. There [are] young and old students, local and international students, and this allows people to share their different points of view and everyone can bring something to the table.” Generally, students find their peers to be “very laid-back” and “open minded.” “Friendly” is another adjective that often springs to mind. As one math major notes, “When a student is struggling, it is not uncommon to find someone willing to help you.” And a nutrition major agrees adding, “I was lost as I was looking for my class and a pair of students noticed and helped me…I did not even [have to] ask.” Perhaps this content freshman says it best, “As I see it everyone fits in with everyone. No matter if your religious or non-religious, skater or punker, and right-wing or left-wing. We’re all here for a common goal, to be successful, and that's what brings us together.”

Campus Life

Cal State San Bernardino has a large commuter population hence many students simply “do [their] own thing.” And while some undergrads lament that “there's not much in terms of fun activities here,” others insist that life is a blast “as long as you get involved in groups/clubs.” As one senior interjects, “Greek life is a big deal, always active.” Many students also herald the Rec Center which offers “a large gym, climbing wall [and] basketball courts.” Undergrads also flock to the Student Union which is home to the Gaming Center and the Pub, both popular hangout spots. There are a myriad of events such as “card making in the Women’s Center” and “movie night at the library.” Additionally, “the theater/music departments are always putting on a performance.” Students also appreciate that “the fitness center offers low cost trips to many places in California to give students the opportunity to camp, hike, go horseback riding, and even snorkeling.” Further, undergrads “also get discounted tickets to movie theaters, theme parks and other fun places in the area.”
