HP LaserJet 1020 driver Mac Catalina

Hi @Vgan,

I'd like to help!

HP LaserJet 1020 Printer series driver for macOS 10.15 is not available from the HP website or Apple Software Update. However, Gutenprint [formerly called Gimp-Print] provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.

NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Yesterday I installed Big Sur on My MacBook Pro 2017. At work is an old HP Laserjet 1020 printer. I installed the printer driver package from the Apple website on Catalina to work. You won't be able to install it on this version. Not support.

Driver HP LaserJet 1020 MacOS Big Sur

August 17, 2020 · 2 min read

Apple used to provide drivers for download for some old models of HP LaserJet [and other] printers. But it has now stopped supporting that, and you can now instead go to HPs website to download the drivers for some of their older models or LaserJet printers that are compatible with macOS operating systems.

You can click this link to get to the HP support page where they've listed the supported printer models and also the driver downloads.

I have an old HP LaserJet 1020. Although it's not listed in the page above, it still works with the 1022 driver, that is listed [I'm guessing because they're the same series].

I'm listing the steps on how to install the LaserJet 1020 printer on macOS Catalina [10.15.6].

  1. Go to this page and download the driver based on the macOS version you have.
  2. After the download has finished, open the image file. Then double click on the content of the image file to install the drivers.
  3. Once the driver installation has finished, connect your printer to your macbook and then turn it on.
  4. Open "System Preferences", go to "Printers & Scanners", and then click the add [+] button below the list of printers on the left side.
  5. Your printers should shop up in the Add window. Click it.
  6. Now select the "Use" dropdown field and click "Select Printer Software" option. Search for your printer version [for 1020, search for 1022 and select that].
  7. Press Add. And that's it.

Your printer should now be all setup and ready to print! You can print a test page to confirm [I'll suggest though directly printing what you want to print as a test, to avoid printing a fake page and wasting a sheet of paper].

Though HP doesn't explicitly have a set of Mac drivers for the Laserjet 1020, there is a workaround. To install drivers for HP Laserjet 1020 on a Mac OS X, follow these instructions.

  1. 1

Turn off and unplug the printer.

  2. 2

Download and install the drivers. See external links below. Note that the file is very large and will take some time to download. [If you take the time to look at the supported printer models, you'll notice that HP Laserjet 1020 isn't among them. Don't worry about that just yet.]

The printer will still work on Catalina normally , but the included Canon 32 bit software will not. You can use Apple's own Image Capture or Preview to scan documents if the Canon software is not updated. I think my Canon printer is older ... its a Pixma E610 ... but I can print after upgrading to Catalina.
