Will there be a 2023 Dodge Durango?

Price: We expect 2023 Dodge Durango prices to start at about $36,000 in its current form, but that could rise to around $50,000.

There is some rumor and speculation surrounding the fate of the Dodge Durango. Previously, the Durango shared a platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee just entered an all-new generation based on a different platform. If rumors are to be believed, the 2023 Dodge Durango will become a stablemate with the full-size, body-on-frame Jeep Wagoneer rather than the Grand Cherokee.

Since the Wagoneer is an expensive premium SUV, a new Durango on the same platform could be a more affordable rival to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition priced around the $50,000 mark. Another possibility is the Durango could continue sharing a platform with the Grand Cherokee and remain in its place as a midsize 3-row SUV with a unibody architecture. Another realistic, if a bit boring, possibility is that the 2023 Durango will be a carryover model with few changes at all.

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding the future of the Dodge Durango. We will keep an eye out for any news and update this review accordingly.

Standard Features

The pricing of the 2023 Dodge Durango depends on the for-now unknown future of this SUV. If it remains a midsize 3-row unibody SUV, it will probably start at about $36,000. If it evolves into a full-size, body-on-frame SUV, it will probably start closer to $50,000, competing with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle [typically, around the 2-3 years mark] with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better [or worse] than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? [Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.]

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

More About How We Rate Vehicles

The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT HELLCAT, made its debut as the most powerful internal combustion engine [ICE]-powered SUV ever. Thanks to its supercharged 6.2-liter HELLCAT HEMI® V8 and quick-shifting 8HP95 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, the three-row SUV put down some amazing performance numbers [0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, 1/4-mile time of 11.5 seconds, and a top speed of 180 mph.

Originally announced for a single model year, demand was so strong that Dodge ended up adding an additional 1,000 units to its original production run of 2,000 units.

Then in August at the brand’s “Speed Week” event, Dodge CEO, Tim Kuniskis unveiled that the Durango SRT HELLCAT would be back for 2023. The announcement was short and sweet, and other than saying it would return for 2023 with the same power rating no additional information was given. We were at the event and even asked Kuniskis about how many they were planning on producing, but even that answer was vague.

On Friday, we learned that Dodge had sent its dealers an updated order guide for the 2023 Dodge Durango [WD] lineup. The guide went over all of the new changes for the 2023 model year [most of which we will cover later this week], but most importantly discussed a few details about the 2023 Dodge Durango SRT HELLCAT.

But now thanks to the order guides, we have learned a few new details about the Durango SRT HELLCAT that we can share with you.

For 2023, Dodge has simplified its entire Durango lineup to help fulfill orders faster. This includes the HELLCAT. This means customers will be able to choose from three different packages for the HELLCAT model. And while the order guide doesn’t state the specifics of the packages for HELLCAT, it does for the SRT392 model.

In 2021, the SRT392 and HELLCAT models were optioned identical, so we believe that will be the same going into 2023 too.

The three packages include a HELLCAT [2XV] entry-level package [which is listed as a late-availability], a HELLCAT Plus [2XW] package, and HELLCAT Premium [2XY] package.

According to the order guide, the SRT392 Plus package adds the following content…

  • Power Sunroof
  • High-Performance Laguna Leather Seats
  • Black Roof Rails
  • Integrated Roof Rail Crossbars
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control [ACC] with Stop
  • Advance Brake Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rain Sense Windshield Wipers
  • Trailer-Tow Group

The SRT392 Premium follows up the SRT392 Plus by including that equipment but adding the following…

  • SRT Red Brembo® Brake Calipers
  • Red Seatbelts
  • Premium Hand-Wrapped Instrument Panel
  • Carbon Fiber Interior Accents
  • 19-Speaker Harman Kardon® Premium Audio System
  • 2nd-Row Console & Storage

Now, when the 2021 model made its debut, it had a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price [MSRP] starting at $80,995. But that is about to get a lot more expensive for 2023. According to the guide, the starting MSRP for each trim will look like this…

  • HELLCAT [2XV] Package – starting at $91,185
  • HELLCAT Plus [2XW] Package – starting at $97,185
  • HELLCAT Premium [2XY] Package starting at $102,085

But also keep in mind, those prices don’t include destination, taxes, title, and other fees. So for those who were able to purchase one in 2021, you can at least be happy you saved some money.

One other thing we have learned about is exterior colors. Many were disappointed at the lack of availability in the color department for the 2022 model. For 2023, Dodge will keep the four colors from 2022, but also add five new colors to the lineup…

  • DB Black [PXJ]
  • White Knuckle [PW7]
  • Velvet Red [PRV]
  • Destroyer Gray [PDN]
  • Frostbite [PCA] – NEW
  • Night Moves [PCQ] – NEW
  • Vapor Gray [PAS] – NEW
  • Red Oxide [PHC] – NEW
  • Triple Nickel [PSE] – NEW

All of the colors [except DB Black and White Knuckle] will come with an additional charge of $395. A Blacktop option will also be available, as Dodge did showcase it at the Speed Weeks event.

Now while much of the Durango lineup will be available for ordering immediately, expect the Durango SRT HELLCAT to be available to order after the new year.

Now please keep in mind, given the current state of the auto industry some of these details could change.

When can you order a 2023 Durango?

The Premium Package includes Plus Package content along with a leather-wrapped dashboard, red seat belts, carbon-fiber trim and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. Orders will open for the 2023 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat in September, with deliveries expected to begin in early 2023.

Is the Dodge Durango going to be discontinued?

Despite rumors that the Durango could be discontinued for 2023, it now seems the SUV will be living on and possibly getting a redesign for the 2024 model year. This current generation of Durango has been around since 2011 and only just got its latest updates in 2021, so it's not necessarily out of date.

Is the Durango getting a redesign?

In fact, we don't expect many changes to the 2023 Durango, though rumors had circulated about a redesign that would take the Durango from a unibody frame to a body-on-frame vehicle like the newly introduced Wagoneer. These changes will likely happen in the future for 2024.

Why is the Durango being discontinued?

Dodge offered a Durango SRT Hellcat for the 2021 model year but warned us at that time it was a one-model-year offer: emissions and fuel efficiency requirements meant the automaker would stop making the supercharged SUV after one year.
