Big Sur is one of the world's most beautiful marathons! So mark your calendars—it is held on the last Sunday of April. Moderately difficult, with some hills on the course, it is the largest rural marathon in the world. Its stunning trail winds through redwoods, along Pacific coastline and picturesque ranches. Big Sur International Marathon is certified by USATF and is a Boston qualifier.

The Big Sur International Marathon course starts and ends on beautiful Highway 1, running from Big Sur to Carmel, California. It's easy to run with the ocean breeze in your face, marveling towering waves, mountains, and lush pastures. One of the main attractions of the course is the iconic Bixby Bridge. It marks the halfway point of the race.

Water stations are located approximately every two miles of the course. Entertainment is a vibrant mix of classical, jazz, and rock-and-roll with local bands performing it throughout the course and at the finish. The main highlights are the Yamaha grand piano at Bixby Bridge. There are also Taiko drummers at the foot of Hurricane Point and amazing belly dancers at mile 25 and much more. The Big Sur International Marathon is a uniquely Californian experience that belongs on every runner's bucket list.

Describing the Big Sur Marathon is difficult without using up superlatives. But there’s truth to all of that; after all, Visit California has named it as one of the best races in the state and one of the 4 underrated marathons you’ve got to run. Not to mention, event organizers had to limit the number of participants that get to run.

Run alone, with your partner, or as a group: the categories for the upcoming races allow more flexibility. Pairs or groups of up to 15 can register as couples or groups. Loyal runners [those who have completed one or more Big Sur Marathon races in the past], locals, and first-timers are also among the categories available.

‘The tremendous popularity of the Big Sur Marathon is no surprise, considering the incredibly picturesque scenery you’ll encounter along the way.’

Is the Big Sur Marathon worth it?
