History of the “happy slam”

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held yearly over the last fortnight of January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The competition precedes the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open and is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments conducted each year. They originally played it on grass courts, but since 1988, it has been played on three different types of hardcourt surfaces: green-coloured Rebound Ace until 2007, blue Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019, and blue GreenSet after 2020. 

The Australasian Championships was the tournament's original name. In 1927, it was renamed the Australian Championships. It was renamed the Australian Open in 1969. The Australian Open has been held in five Australian cities from 1905: Melbourne (55 times), Sydney (17 times), Adelaide (14 times), Brisbane (7 times) and Perth (3 times).

The fortnight has a permanent home in Melbourne, which comes alive every summer with the sounds of serves, forehands, and backhands.
